1015 East Hastings is a dual mid-rise development in Vancouver, delivering 168 homes across two connected towers of 16 and 14 storeys in partnership with BC Housing and the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. The project serves people of all ages seeking stable housing, offering a range of tenures including 87 affordable homes, 56 market rental units, and 25 shelter and supportive housing units, alongside an 80-bed shelter with associated services and social enterprise space. The development provides a drug and alcohol-free environment designed to support residents on their path to wellness and stability, and is built to meet the City of Vancouver's Green Building Policy.
At its heart, 1015 East Hastings is a project rooted in Indigenous community. Spearheaded by Susan Tatoosh, Executive Director of the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society, the development was born from a fifteen-year vision to create a place offering shelter, housing, and services tailored specifically to the needs of urban Indigenous peoples. Architectural expression throughout celebrates Indigenous culture, developed in collaboration with Elders and artists. The facility includes a ground-floor Day Centre with dining, a day lounge, an art studio, counseling spaces, and a cultural gathering and ceremony space. Before construction began, Urban One hosted a land blessing and blanket ceremony with the VAFCS and community Elders, a reflection of the genuine engagement that defines Urban One's approach to projects of this significance.
The dual-tower configuration, connected at the core, presented unique structural and site logistics challenges across 158,618 square feet of floor area and three levels of below-grade parking. The project required extensive soil remediation, careful coordination around high voltage lines, the Hastings Bridge, and adjacent rail infrastructure, and Urban One successfully negotiated a necessary Glen Drive street closure with the City of Vancouver through a comprehensive logistics study. Value engineering efforts identified $2,500,000 in potential savings during pre-construction, with approved measures including structural sequencing changes and envelope simplifications. Completed in 2025, 1015 East Hastings represents Urban One's commitment to building projects that make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
