A first of its kind for the region
tul’al’txw
A house of living and learning at North Island College
Tul’al’txw
As Design Builder, Urban One led the $77M construction of tul'al'txw at North Island College's Courtenay campus, a landmark student housing development delivering 217 new beds across three buildings, including 60 dedicated units for students with families.
Developed in close partnership with the K'ómoks First Nation and the K'ómoks Connections Committee, the project was shaped by Indigenous cultural values and a shared vision for inclusive, accessible campus living. The buildings feature mass timber construction sourced entirely within British Columbia, supporting the province's Wood First program and reducing environmental impact.
Upon completion, tul'al'txw earned Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified Gold, the highest level of certification under the program, achieved by just over 156 sites across Canada, reflecting Urban One's commitment to meaningful, inclusive design for people of all abilities. From government and Indigenous partners to designers, trades, and suppliers, tul'al'txw stands as a testament to what collaborative, community-centred construction can achieve.
